Ever since I switched from my electrical shaver to wet shaving I have used the tiny plastic holder that came with it to cover the shaver. It bothered me that I had to store the blades elsewhere and since the plastic holder broke I was looking for an alternative. I did not find one.
So I designed it myself. I had a few requirements in my head:
- The case shall hold the razor and a full magazine of blades
- The case shall protect the loaded blade of the razor from the outside (and vice versa)
- The case shall be printable „in place“ . A few parts may be screwed on for the mechanics
- The case should look nice (maybe two color print design)
- The mechanism for locking and replacing the blade magazine shall grip to a special part of the geometry of the magazine (no modification of the magazine necessary)
I think I was able to fulfill the requirements mentioned.
The case is a three hinge print in place design that needs just a few parts for holding the razor and the mechanics for the magazine. The razor holder is printed in TPU for easy placement. The case covers the razor blades completely, although I found that it might be best to let the razor dry after use to avoid the “gel strip“ sticking to the case. I place it up side down for a while after use.
The mechanics for gripping the blade magazine use a single lever that hooks into the back of the magazine. Instead of a spring I have used two magnets that face each other with opposite polarity (I honestly did not want to buy a spring that night I designed and printed it).
The third hinge acts as a clasp and holds the case closed. So far I have travelled many many times with this case just thrown into my beauty case and had no issues.
Please feel free to share your feedback. I am happy to consider modifications and improvements.
Print instructions:
I suggest three slicing steps:
- Import the file as one model with subparts and delete everything that does not belong to the case. That way you keep the alignment between the three parts of the case
- New File - Import the file as separate bodies and slice the mechanics.
- New File - Import the file as separate bodies and slice the FLEX part.
Case:
Print the case with no other parts on the bed. As it is print in place, leave the orientation of the bodies as they are. Use the settings according to your filament. USE supports for the large overhangs but suppress them between the hexagons.
For dual color print: Add a pause after the first millimeter.
You can add letters with PrusaSlicer into the hexagon shapes on top to write your name/whatever.
Mechanics:
No special instructions other than decrease layer height and increase detail level. Place the parts on the „side“ or „upside“ to avoid overhangs.
Razor holder:
Print in FLEX material. Use cooling and slower print speeds as the part is very small.
Needed Parts:
- 2 x 8 * 3 mm magnet
- 6 x M3 * 8 mm thread forming screw
Assembly instructions:
- Print all the parts.
- Press in the first magnet into the case. Polarity is not yet crucial.
- Check polarity of the second magnet and mark the side that shall face the first magnet to achieve repelling orientation.
- Press in the second magnet into the lever with the correct orientation.
- Hold the lever in place while screwing in the two brackets that hold the lever.
- You can now verify that the lever is moving and acting as spring loaded.
- Press in the FLEX razor holder into the two mounting brackets.
- Mount the assembly into position.
- Load the razor blade magazine.
- Load your razor.
- Done.
Have fun and happy shaving.
