I had to make a five-tier wedding cake for a friend, and I'm just an amateur baker… I designed the plates and the legs. It turned out to be pretty good and sturdy.
I created a very long list of models and leg sizes in millimeters for all your needs, lol. There is also a connector if you need to connect two legs for some reason.
How to use:
Let's say you have three tiers: 200mm, 150mm, and 100mm.
You don't need a plate for the lowest one since this is going to go on the table or whatever. So, you need to measure the thickness of the 200mm cake and decide if you're going to put the plate over the icing or under it.
The legs' length will go up to just under the plate. Three legs per plate. The smaller cake that will go on this plate is 150mm. I suggest making it 1cm smaller, so use a 140mm plate. Repeat for the other tiers.
Tips:
- There is a hole in the middle of the plate that's the same size as the legs. To center the plate, I just put it in the middle and use the center hole to mark it, so I can align everything when I'm putting the legs on.
- You could also consider having a long central pole going all the way through.
- The legs are printed a bit smaller to make them fit. Even if they're pretty loose, it doesn't really matter since the weight of the cake above will keep it down.
Now, I know everybody is going to scream about using printed parts for food, but PLA is considered food safe, and so is PETG. Just make sure it's single-use, as the issue with 3D prints and food is that all those layer lines are places where bacteria can hide.
I forgot to take pictures, and they're now all inside the cake, which is in the freezer and wrapped up. I'll try to remember to post a picture of the cake at the wedding next week. 😉
I've also included the three Fusion 360 files if you need them—it's parametric.
Printing Tips:
Nothing special. Two walls, 15% infill, 0.2mm layer height (but I guess you could use an even larger nozzle to print faster).
