Why i made the discsaver
My closest discgolf course is next to a sports arena, and of course lots of people loose their discs on the arenas roof. It is strictly forbidden to climb up on the roof, and therefore all the discs just stay there and rot away. That is what gave me the idea to make the discsaver. Now i can fish the discs down from the roof with my drone and they can do something other than just sitting on the roof.
Here is a video of the discsaver in action
All pictures and videos are of the V1 of the DiscSaver. The only difference is that the V2 has hooks to mount the rubber band / spring and a channel on the rear block to route it through.
PRINTING:
This has been designed to be as easy to print as possible. Just follow the directions.
I have included a screenshot from my slicer showing the correct print orientation of all the parts.
I always use at least 3 wall lines in my print for strenght.
25% - 50% infill.
NO SUPPORT
Print in whatever material suits your needs. PLA+ works for me, but i don't live in a very hot climate. (Norway)
ASSEMBLY
To assemble you need:
- 6 M3 bolts - 4 ~ 30 mm long and two ~ 25mm long.
- 6 M3 lock nuts
Just look at the screenshot from Onshape to se how it should be assembled. It should not be too hard.
HOW TO USE
To use the discsaver you will need:
- A drone that can handle the weight of a disc + the discsaver (perferrably a drone with gps position hold and camera on a gimbal. A normal 5inch fpv drone will work, but it is very difficult)
- ~ 1 meter of a lightweight chain
- ~ 3 meters of a thin and strong rope
- Zip-ties
- A rubber band or spring
First you need to mount the chain under your drone. I mounted it in the middle of my drone with a zip-tie.
The chain is supposed to hang between the drone and the rope to avoid the rope getting caught in the drones props.
Then you cut of one length of rope around 2m long and one length around 1m long
Tie the ends of the 1m long rope to each side of the discsaver.
Find the middle of the rope and tie a on it loop.
Last step is to tie the 2m long rope between the chain and the loop on the discsaver.
Now you just need to find a rubber band or a spring and mount it on the hooks on the discsavers arms and route it in the channel on the rear block.
The tension should be enough to open the discsaver when it lies on the ground but it should close when you pick it up by the rope.
