This design was inspired by the Impossible Pyramid Passthrough and the question “can you make it spin?". The design is completely from scratch and in contrast to the pyramid, this uses two separate, subtly different shapes for the enclosing base and the top.
At the moment, this is still a work in progress, but the answer to the original question is already “yes”.
The original design required a 10mm bearing ball snapped in at the bottom. An alternative model has a regular tip and does not require further assembly.
This is best printed at a smallish layer height, like 0.15mm. I tweak the layer height to be even lower at the most overhanging parts at the bottom. The top itself gets heavier, and therefore better, with increased infill. I currently print the base at 20% infill and the top at 42%.
