The EDA (eye drop assist) consists of an eyepiece and pliers and allows easy positioning of the eye drop bottle in front of the eye. Long handles in an ergonomic shape allow for easy dosage of pressure on the bottle for people with hand mobility problems such as arthritis or sports injuries. Openings on all four sides of the eyepiece simplify correct positioning over the eye.
The eyepiece can be used alone or in combination with the pliers.
The pliers are available for bottles with a diameter from 20-25 mm and can be used with many different eye drops such as
Inflanefram, Ganfort, AZOPT, OFTAQUIX, Hylo-Vision, PRED-FORTE, Prednifluid …
For more detailled information please refer to the EDAB-Compatibility list in the download area.
The eyepiece fits for bottles with a thread of 14.5mm diameter and 2mm pitch. Currently there exist five different versions of the eyepiece:
A) with thread
B) for plug on (without thread)
C) with thread, optimized for printing without support
D) extended with thread
E) extended for plug on (without thread)
For the basic shape of the eyepiece I was inspired by
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3715276 from “jbergmans”
Slicing info eyepiece:
material PETG or PLA
layer height = 0.2 mm
perimeter = 3
support for version A, B, D and E required; version C without support
Slicing info pliers:
material PETG
layer height = 0.3 mm
perimeter = 4
infill grid = 40%
All parts are printed with nozzle diameter = 0.4 mm
remark: If the parts are ordered from a 3D printing service that does not allow detailed parameter setting for perimeter, infill = 100% should be selected instead.
Assembly instructions for the pliers:
Two cylinder head screws M3x12 required
Clear the throughholes in the middle and upper part with a drillbit 3.0 mm
Clear the holes in the lower part with a drillbit 2.5 mmAlign the screws exactly vertically and turn them directly into plastics of the lower part for some turns (not complete) to preform the thread.
Remove the screws and screw the three parts of the pliers together as shown in the picture
The connection functions like a self-locking nut and should not be reopened unnecessarily
Handling instructions:
first place the eyepiece on the bottle
open the pliers completely
insert the bottle sideways to avoid damage to the clamps and close the pliers
adjust the pliers to the middle of the bottle height
In practical use during the test phase it turned out that eyepieces in a different color than the eyedrop bottle are very helpful in recognizing the correct position over the eye.
The eyepiece should be disinfected regularly.
It is also a good idea to use antibacterial medical filament for the eyepiece.
