These are a combination of alignment jigs and upgrade parts for the Academy 1/72 scale PBY Catalina series of kits. The jigs can be used on all variants of the kit (PBY-2, PBY-4, PBY-5, and PBY-5A). The upgrade parts are specific to the PBY-2 and PBY-4. All were printed using my Prusa MK4 and 0.4mm nozzle using PLA filament and standard settings.
Engine nacelle alignment jig
This is used with the RedRoo Models Catalina Engine Correction Set. The set instructions require the modeler scratch a block of wood with holes to ensure alignment of the new engine nacelles. This jig can be printed instead of sourcing a block of wood and drilling holes.
Wing alignment jig
This is a 12 inch long jig that holds the trailing edges of the 3 main wing parts (center and 2 outer sections) aligned to ensure a flat wing along the entire length. Cement the 3 parts together then place in the jig and hold with rubber bands for a few hours while the cement fully cures.
Rear gunner/observer platform for PBY-1/2/3/4 versions
The kit rear portion of the fuselage contains incorrect details for interior, which is correct for the 5/5A versions. This upgrade is only used if you plan to correct the kit errors with the rear fuselage, to include moving the hatches 27 scale inches forward and reshaping them to a correct rectangular shape. Once completed, the only thing visible inside the fuselage is the platform and central walkway.
Wingtip float inserts (2 required)
The floats are accurate enough, however if the floats are displayed deployed (down) the underside of the kit wing has a large opening that is the upper wing half interior. This should be a flat sheet with an oval opening for the float actuator.
Simply snip off most of the locating hole for the kit actuator, leaving about 1/16 inch (1.6mm). Drop the insert into the opening and use cyanoacrylate to bond the insert to the plastic. Fill the gaps with your favorite modeling filler.
A full description of the correction will be on my website, greenshirtmodeler.org with links to detailed descriptions of each of the above items.
