Statue of St. Barbara at the baroque Way of the Cross in Heiligenkreuz. The sandstone figures found there were made from 1731 onwards.
According to tradition, Barbara von Nikomedien is a Christian virgin and martyr of the 3rd century. She was beheaded by her father Dioscuros because she refused to give up her Christian faith and her virgin devotion to God. In the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches, Barbara is venerated as a saint. Barbara is also referred to as a martyr in the Protestant calendar of names. Since the 12th century, the day of commemoration of St. Barbara in the liturgy of the Catholic and Greek Orthodox Churches has been 4 December. The main attributes of the saint are the tower and the chalice.
