This is my take on the Neon “hype”. A xmas decoration (star), using PLA and Glow In The Dark PLA.

Versions

  • VERSION 1: My first take, 8mm thick (sometime too snug for the battery
  • VERSION 2: Better friction fit, 11.6mm thick
  • VERSION 3: Added a compartiment for the battery holder, aligned the ‘slit' so that it is easier to access the on/off switch (with a pen) without opening the star up.

The star is made of four parts. All parts fit snugly (0.1mm tolerance). For some printers this is friction fit, for others a little dab of superglue will fix things permanently.

  1. Step 1, print all parts. On the MK4S it takes about 1 hour 10 minutes for everything.

  2. Step 2 Assemble the bottom part and put in the LED, filament. Thread the ends through the small holes in the Base-part.  (You will see very small cut-outs in all parts, these align with the holes for the filament). (2A and 2B (figures), the V3 version has a compartiment for the battery, and the cover has a slit though which one can reach the switch.

  3. Step 3. Click on the top part of the outer part (transparent part B)

  4. Step 4. Solder on the CR2032 battery holder onto the filament ends. (check polarity first).

  5. Step 5. Click on the middle part. (Don't glue this part, as you need to be able top open/close this to switch on/off the battery).

  6. Step 6-7, enjoy with the leds on or as glow in the dark star.

Caution: Glow in the dark PLA is abrasive! Use a hardened nozzle)

  • BOM:
    • PLA black (or any other color you like
    • PLA Glow In The Dark (any color), or something semi transparent if you don't want the glow in the dark, but only LED light.
    • CR2032 3V battery holder, 5mm thick (see image) (from a certain Chinese webshop)
    • 300 mm (30cm) LED filament, (any color you like) (from a certain Chinese webshop). (see image)
