This project provides the PolyBriX parts and the documentation to build  a structure that resembles a propane molecule ( illustrated in the cover photo ). However, more structures that resemble chemical compounds can be built with the provided parts, either printing the files only once or more times.

For example, methane and ethane look-alike structures can be built with the provided parts as well. One can imagine building a methane molecule and then modifying it to create ethane and then propane.

Note: The parts are not very accurate in terms of angles or possible connections that each “atom” can create, as they were designed for a more generic use, but the possible shapes resemble enough certain chemical compounds to serve an educational purpose.

As some of the connectors can rotate, quite complex structures that resemble shape modifying proteins can be created. The only limit is the imagination.

You can check the PolyBriX project to find more parts to work with.

Printing instructions:

Walls count: 5
Infill pattern: Zig-Zag or Rectilinear
Infill density: 10%

No supports.

I've used PETG, but PLA will probably work as well

What to print:

  • large_bricks.stl
  • all_plugs_bricks_and_connectors
  • all_sockets_connectors

Assembly instructions

  1. Make sure all the contact areas ( joints, shafts, etc ) are clean after printing, before starting to work with them.
You can join two bricks/connectors by pressing the plug of one into the socket of another or by sliding them vertically.
  2. Create 3 shapes like in the image below:

      3. For 2 of them, add extra parts like in the image below:

     4. Assemble all the 3 structures like in the image below:

     5. The final shape, that resembles a propane molecule, looks like this:

I'd love to know what additional shapes can be built with these.
