Lesson Plan and Constraints:
Our task was to create a 3D-printed coin of a “physical logo” for ourselves.
- All coins must be made from an initial revolve resulting in a coin that is 6cm in diameter and 1.25cm in thickness.
- Can't have any supports
- It should look like a gear
- Can't have moving parts
- It has to slope downwards in the middle
Summary and General Advice:
My maker coin consists of a jagged spheroid with many curves and cuts to resemble a shuriken with aerodynamics.
Overview and Design Choices:
Honestly, I gave no thought to the design whatsoever, I made it up as I went.
My original idea was for a circle with corners and many holes ended, up being the result.
The entire design was made in a ‘go with the flow’ sort of headspace, and it ended up really good looking.
For my first sketch, I created the base for the revolve.

After that, I revolved it to create the coin shape in a sloping fashion.

I then added these circular updrafts going up to the max height on the shape, to give it some edge.

This was the point where it all started coming together, when I added the circular cuts through the edges, 8 of them.

I wanted to add more jagged parts to create a sharpness feel in the object, so I added these triangular extrusions that aimed towards the center.

I then added cuts through the circular extrusions to add some draft to it, making it more lightweight.

Next, I added a circular extrusion to the center to create depth.

I added a cut to the center to again; add some draft.

The next thing to do was to add triangular cuts to the ‘corners’ of the shape, I wanted to add some more sharpness to thought and give it more jag.

I added filleting to the edge around the circular holes.

Next, I added holes in the center to require less filament but also retain an aerodynamic shape.

I added a fillet underneath it in order to keep the round coin shape; it was looking less like one.

After that, I added the same thing on the top.
