This changes the Framework 16 laptop into a more literal mobile computer. The intent is so you can play VR anywhere.

Update 1: I am working on a V2, although I'm unsure if I have the time to complete it for this contest. - If you have any ideas for this see the comment thread I created.

Update 2: I, obviously, did not finish V2 in time. I'm almost done with it but am on the edge about a V3. It definitely looks nicer, but the hangup is the cooling. Traditional AIOs won't work due to the size of their cooling plates & pumps. I'd need to either make a custom water loop or hack an AIO, whether that's a custom heatblock on the CPU & GPU to work with the AIO, or somehow modify the pump location… and still need custom heatblocks (these could be separate though).

*Consider this to be more of a proof of concept.

This “kit” breaks down the Framework 16 laptop into its components and stores it vertically inside a backpack with a battery bank at the bottom. - the build utilizes off the shelf components and printed parts. The fans are standard 80mm fans (6 in total), 2mm O-rings, M3 bolts & heat set inserts, M4 nuts/bolts, and M5 nuts/bolts.

Overall dimensions: 18.5” x 13.8” 6.7” | black & orange because Printables & Prusa.

Inspired by Bag Builds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04lLlU_WUwk

Notes: Nuts, Bolts, O-rings, and heat set inserts (94459A140) are from McMasterCarr. Also, I recommend printing the spacers in TPU.

Future Design would likely more reflect the HP VR Backpack G2 Workstation.

If I were to make a v2, there are several things I’d like to change.

  1. Rip off the heat pipes of the mother board and use a AIO instead
  2. Rip out all of the cooling and plastic from the GPU insert and use an AIO on that too
  3. Go back to the original battery bank where I had 4 vertically across the bottom.
  4. Modify the intake so it blows air at the components rather than just into the bag. – This should also help reduce “thickness”
  5. Figure out a more rigid mount system, maybe to the frame of a bag or some bolt on panel to the back of a backpack.
  6. Add some lock in system for the expansion cards so the ports don’t vibrate to death.
  7. Add micro peripherals – small screen, keyboard, and mouse. Just to get it started and booted into VR/AR
  8. Maybe include a Wi-Fi 7 router to be used with a Wireless VR headset (like the quest), so you can set the bag down and still play. – This would be more of a Steam VR thing.
