The Dendera Zodiac is an ancient Egyptian astronomical ceiling painting located in the Temple of Hathor at Dendera, Egypt. The temple was built during the Ptolemaic period (305-30 BCE) and is considered one of the best-preserved examples of ancient Egyptian architecture.
The Painting is a 16-meter-long (52-foot-long) ceiling painting that depicts the zodiac signs in their correct order, with some minor variations. The painting shows the 12 constellations as they were known to the ancient Egyptians:
1. Aries 2. Taurus 3. Gemini 4. Cancer 5. Leo 6. Virgo 7. Libra 8. Scorpio 9. Sagittarius 10. Capricorn 11. Aquarius 12. Pisces
The painting is remarkable for its accuracy and detail, considering it was created over 2,000 years ago. The zodiac signs are depicted in a circular pattern, with the constellations of Aries and Scorpio facing each other at opposite ends.
Historical Significance:
* The Dendera Zodiac is one of the oldest known depictions of the zodiac, predating many later Greek and Roman representations.
* It provides valuable insights into ancient Egyptian astronomy and astrology, which were closely tied to their religious beliefs and practices.
* The painting has been used as a reference point for understanding the development of Western astrology.
