I managed to aquire a medlab wall panel from Babylon 5. These were made of 0.060" thick styrene vacuformed over a wooden buck and then painted in a blue, then detail highlighted in silver and then dry brushed with a green color. Somebody who helped make these said that house paint was used. The exact brand of paint is unknown but it definately has a matte finish and is not glossy at all
This file was created using a 3d scan of the back of the vacuformed panel. the original was about 23 or 24 inches square. The reason why the back was scanned for this file and not the front is that the peeling and bubling paint on the front, as well as the damage along one edge and the general flexibility of the original meant that it was impossible to get a perfect scan of the front free of any defects or warpage. The back side is what touched the mold anyway, so this model is as close to being a replica of the original buck (or mold) as possible.
It has been edited from the original scan to fill in missing pieces from my original panel, and my intent is to print this as a way of supporting my wall panel from the back and displaying it safely. As such the flange around the edges is slightly larger than it would normally be. This isn't a problem as a vacuforming buck since it is likely that in the end there will always be some excess that the end user will wish to trim off.
I don't have a vacuforming machine big enough to make accurate replicas yet some filling and sanding would be recommended before attempting to do so as some imperfections may show up in the finished piece. Some modification to the flange around the edge might be desirable to ensure easy release from the mold but since I dont have a way to test it, and that part would get trimmed off anyway when doing pulls, I'll leave it as is for now. This panel might also be nice scaled down and made into a fridge magnet, or if scaled to 1/12 scale could be used to make a medlab diorama scaled to match the babylon 5 action figures.
