The Santasaurus is inspired by the work of magician and optical illusion inventor, Jerry Andrus. many paper versions of a dragon moving it's head about are available as well. I
decided to see if I could 3D print one - here is the result.

Here is a video of what it looks like on your table:

And if you are not sure how it works, here is the Reveal:

This is an easy to print illusion that you can display at Christmas time! Make a bunch and they will follow you around the room.

There are two versions of the “body” print. The only difference is the addition of a slit to allow and additional 15 degree tilt to the head (though I found it works just fine without). If you run the slit version, add a piece of tape or super glue to the slit to keep the 15 degree bend.

How to print:

This is an easy print and only takes 5 parts: The main body, head, two side frames, and a rear frame. I printed mine in various colors of PLA - No supports are needed for any of the prints.

Here are the files and how I printed them:

File: 2024-12-14 (1) Santasaurus Body.stl   (Print one of these to build one Santasaurus)
Color change at 0.95, 3.20

File: 2024-12-14 (1) 2024-12-15 (1) Alt Santasaurus Body  (Alternate version of the previous file - adds an additional 15 degree bend in the neck)
Color change at 0.95, 3.20

File: 2024-12-14 (1) Santasaurus Head.stl   (Print one of these to build one Santasaurus)
Color change at 0.95, 1.10, 2.30, 3.20

File: 2024-12-15 (2) Side Frame.stl (Print two of these to build one Santasaurus)
Color Change: None, single color print

File: 2024-12-13 (1) Rear Frame.stl (Print two of these to build one Santasaurus)
Color Change: None, single color print

After printing, assemble the 4 parts - they will simply slide together and should not require glue (but you can glue it if you wish).  The slots on the sides have a compound angle - pay attention during assembly to keep all parts in the correct orientation (see the photos for details).

Fold the “Head” as shown and press it into the slot on the body (do not fold the hat at this time).  If your oprint has trouble fitting in the slot, file the bottom side of the “head” to slide it in easily. After seating the head, bend the hat up - the hat can be glued or taped as needed. It was just that easy!

Lay it on you table and walk around - It's watching you!
