I recreated the first step on the Moon in 3D—it’s been a fun mix of tech and a bit of patience.

It started with the incredible HD scans from NASA's Apollo 11 mission, available through the Lunar and Planetary Institute. These photos, shot on film 44 years ago and 300,000 km away, are historic but far from perfect. Using the open-source photogrammetry tool Micmac, I turned the photos into a 3D point cloud. The result? Pretty noisy, as you’d expect given the conditions back then.

Next came MeshLab, which helped convert that messy point cloud into a basic mesh. At this stage, it looked more like a blurry footprint than anything iconic. That’s where ZBrush came in. I spent a couple of hours cleaning up the details, smoothing the surface, and sculpting the mesh until it finally resembled that famous first step we all know.

It’s not perfect, but I’m happy with how it turned out. Taking something historic and giving it a new dimension was a rewarding process—and a fun way to combine tech, art, and a love of space exploration.
