Description:
This 3D print is an insert into full or empty filament spool which features 3 bolts and flexible parts to accommodate different tree trunk diameters. It is suitable for rolls of filament that have inner hole diameter of 50 - 53 mm. And trees trunk diameter of 35 - 45 mm and height <160 cm. The model marked XXX_bottom is with bottom so you can pour some water into the insert. Due to 3D printing being prone to leakage I would suggest coating the inside with epoxy in this case.
Assembly:
Take the 3D printed insert and slit into the slots 3x M5 nuts (DIN 985) then screw into them 3x M5x25 bolts from the outside. After that put the tree trunk inside and tighten the bolts. These bolts press on flexible elements which put pressure onto the tree trunk (instead of just digging into the wood). Than you can use any filament roll with appropriate inner hole diameter and press the insert into the spool. Its conical shape ensures good holding power when pressed in firmly.
Tips and tricks:
By tightening the bolts unevenly you can correct for the tree trunks curvature and make the tree straight.
Depending on the height, weight and straightness of the tree, empty spool might not be enough to hold the tree so rather use a full spool because of added weight.
Printing:
It is quite easy upside down print but you need supports under two of the flexible elements as shown on the picture below. I had success with tree supports, that broke of easily and stayed on the build plate. The flexible parts get unstuck if needed when you screw in the bolts. 3 perimeters and 15% infill should be enough.
