I always wanted to use an ATX Windows PC inside a MacPro housing with retaining the original looks as much as possible. I looked at the laserhive(https://thelaserhive.com/product-category/mac-pro-kits/) conversion kits, but did not like the appeal and the pricing.

So I decided to create them myself and printed it with grey PETG

Steps

  1. Clean everything out (I had a fully G5 PC), but keep the front plug for later wireing
  2. Cut mainboard mountings with a Dremel and sand them down (the scratches are not visible, as the new mainboard covers them)
  3. Cut out the top separator plate, but leave the mounting part for the panel intact. Also leave the disc drive mountings in.
  4. Cut out the backplate for the mainboard
  5. Screw in the backplate
  6. Glue the mainboard holders on the backplate using a two component glue. I used a sticky tape first to mark the spots - this was a little fiddly. Use M3 inserts and screws.
  7. Screw in the power supply with the bracket using the orginal screws of the Apple PSU (together with an M4 nut

I included all the files, in case somebody wants to modify it.

For the wiring of the front panel (USB and power button/LED) I found an excellent diagram here: https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/g5-front-panel-instructions-atx.312061/

Notes:

  • use the Firewire Ground as power button ground
  • I used a normal disk drive, which works perfectly, when you remove the front cover. I had to cut part of it, as it was inteferring with the main board
  • use a micro ATX board if you can, an ATX (like mine) is a little fiddly.
  • I used the power socked adapter from https://www.printables.com/model/985288-macpro-g5-case-conversion-power-socket-adapter?lang=de togehter with an extension cable. I had to glue it in place with a two component glue.
  • My board had LED lighting support (Aura), which I glued to the front Mac panel
