This wrapping paper station holds three rolls of paper.  It has a tape dispenser, a tool caddy, and the handle doubles as a straight edge cutting guide.

The included tape dispenser has a 3D printed cutting edge that works okay, but it will also accommodate a regular scotch tape dispenser.

The station should accommodate any roll that's 30" long and has a tube that is 1" or larger in diameter.  I use this Wrapaholic double-sided paper.  It's nice and heavy duty, and with three rolls of double-sided paper, I can cover most occasions.    I've been using this for over 2 years and there is still plenty of paper left.

If someone needs a different diameter insert, you can either modify the included step file or message me with the dimensions and I'll post the additional parts.

Parts needed

  • Printed parts:
    • Print Settings
      • Print in PETG, no supports needed.
      • All the printed parts are oriented correctly in the wrapping_paper_station_all_plates_slicer.3mf, which takes advantage of the new multi-plate
    • Plate 1
      • Two handle bars and two handle collars
      • Tool caddy
      • Tape dispenser holding screw and pin
      • (Optional) tape dispenser
    • Plate 2
      • 1 Permanent end plate
      • 3 permanent end inserts
      • 3 permanent end pins
    • Plate 3
      • 1 Adjustable end plate
      • 3 adjustable end inserts
      • 3 adjustable end pins
  • Other hardware:
    • 2 dowels ¾" x 36" - prefer a hardwood dowel like oak or ash
      • 19mm x 914mm – sorry for my metric-using friends, I don't know what dowel sizes are standard there
    • 12 #8 x ½" wood screws

Assembly Steps

Prepare the inserts

The inserts have pins in them to provide support against shear stress.  The pin is printed horizontally while the insert is printed vertically so that their layer lines run different directions.

  • (3x) Insert the pins into the permanent roll ends.  Insert the slot end of the pin in first and make sure the slot in the end of the pin lines up with the slot in the insert. If the pins seem loose, you can put a little CA glue on them.
  • (3x) Insert the pins into the adjustable roll ends.  There's no slot in these pins. If the pins seem loose, you can put a little CA glue on them.

Assemble the Permanent End

This end has permanently installed inserts to support the ends of the roll.

  • (3x) Thread the permanent pins into the permanent end plate (the one with the longer protrusion).  Thread them in from the side opposite the protrusion as shown. The slots in the end are for a large screwdriver if you're having trouble getting them screwed all the way in.
  • Insert a dowel into the center of the permanent end plates. Make sure the protrusion with the screw holes are on the outside (closer to the end of the dowel).  Then put a handle bar and the handle bar collar on the end.  Make sure you use the end of the handle bar without the screw holes, and that the screw hole side faces away from the plate (green arrow in the illustration).
  • Place the collar about 2mm from the end of the dowel.  Screw 2 screws into the collar (blue arrows above)
    • The screws may slightly split the dowel, but it should not matter because it is held together by the collar.  If you want, you can pre-drill the holes with a 1/8" drill bit.
  • With the collar, handle bar, and end plate pushed together as shown above, screw 2 screws into the end plate (red arrows above).
    • The relative orientation of the collar and the end plate are not important.
    • The handle bar should rotate freely.

Assemble the Adjustable End

The adjustable end plate has inserts that are designed to be removed by hand so the roll of wrapping paper can be changed.

  • Note that for this step, we don't screw the inserts into the step.
  • Thread the free end of the center dowel through into the center of the adjustable end plate.  Make sure the protrusion with the screw holes are on the outside (closer to the end of the dowel).
  • Put on the second handle bar, and the second handle bar collar.
  • Before you put the screws into the end plate, set the wrapping paper holder on a flat table so that the two end plates are lined up.  If you don't do this, the wrapping paper station won't sit level.
  • With the collar, handle bar, and end plate pushed together as shown above, screw 2 screws into the end plate (red arrows above).
    • The relative orientation of the collar and the end plate are not important.
    • The handle bar should rotate freely.

Assemble the handle

  • Insert the other dowel into open end of the two handle bars.
  • Center the dowel on the bars and put two screws into one end.
  • Before putting screws into the other end, make sure the wrapping paper station and the handle are resting on a flat surface, otherwise the handle won't be straight.

Add the Caddy

  • Place the caddy over the extrusion on the permanent end.  It is held in place by gravity.

Install the wrapping paper rolls

  • (3x) Place the end of a wrapping paper roll on one of the permanent inserts, then insert the corresponding adjustable insert and thread it into place.  This should hold the wrapping paper roll in place.

Install the tape dispenser

  • You can place the tape dispenser on either end of the station and in either orientation to suit the way you want to use it.
  • Connect the two halves of the tape dispenser around a roll of tape so that the sticky side lays on the cutting edge

  • Thread the tape dispenser pin into the smaller threaded hole in one of the handle bars.
  • Place the tape dispenser on the pin (blue arrow) and then capture it with the large threaded thumbscrew (green arrow).
  • As an alternative, you can skip the 3D printed tape dispenser use a regular scotch tape dispenser.  You can capture it with the same thumbscrew and use the pin as a stop to keep it from rotating.

YOU DID IT.  Enjoy your wrapping paper station!
