Triominos

Placement game for four people

The rules of the game

The aim of the game is to score as many points as possible by placing the matching tiles. The points that can be scored during a game are based on the numbers of tiles played and on special tile arrangements.

Start

At the start of the game, all the tiles are placed face down on the table and shuffled. The players draw their tiles at random. The number of stones that each player draws depends on the number of players: with 2 players, everyone draws 9 stones, with 4, for example, only 7. One of the players constantly records the points scored for everyone.

The player with the highest triple tile (a tile with 3 identical numbers) starts the game by placing this tile. In return, he receives the sum of the numbers on the tile. Exception: if the zero tile (i.e. the one with 3 zeros) is placed as a triple tile, the player who places it receives 40 points. If no player can or wants to place a triple tile, the player with the highest tile, i.e. the tile with the highest total, starts. If two or more players have the same number of stones, the player with the next highest single stone begins. However, the player who discards it is only credited with the sum of the tile.

Placing and drawing

As a rule, the player who has the privilege of starting is rewarded with an increased probability of victory. Each player then takes it in turn to place a new tile next to those already placed, with each tile having an edge adjacent to at least one tile already placed. The numbers on the touching edges must be the same (see pictures for examples).

If a player cannot or does not want to place a tile, he must move a new tile. Each tile drawn means 5 penalty points for the player. The player must continue to move new checkers until he either can/will place a checker or until he has moved 3 checkers. If he is still unable or unwilling to lay a tile after 3 tiles have been drawn, he will receive a total of 25 penalty points. However, if he is able to place a checker, he records the sum of the placed checker minus the penalty points, whereby the sum can be either positive or negative.

Points

Additional bonus points are awarded for special pieces. For example, a bridge - where only one edge and one corner of the tile laid touches other tiles - is worth 40 bonus points. If you complete a hexagon with one tile, you get 50 bonus points, if you complete 2 hexagons with the same tile, you get 60 points, and if you complete 3 hexagons at the same time, you get 70 bonus points.

End of the game

When a player places his last tile, this is the start of the last round. He receives a bonus of 25 points and the total number of triominoes held by the other players after this last round. The winner of the game is the player with the most points. In the event of a tie, the player with the highest triomino wins.
