This model is a mini picture frame shaped as a 90's TV, showing a pixelated version of the well-known masterpiece movie "Die Hard" (1988).

You can hang it on the wall or even on a Christmas Tree, since “Die Hard” is a Christmas classic after all 😀

Models info

The movie picture has been obtained by scaling and dithering a photo to a limited 5 color palette, using this webapp (I'm the author, here's the source & help).

The frame has been built using OnShape, here's the link to the public model (dimensions can be modified by changing the variables).

How to print

Die Hard Picture

Import “diehard picture.stl” file in your slicer.

Set color changes at the following heights (MMU is not necessary, it is designed to work with manual changes):

  • initial color: WHITE
  • 0.80 mm, change color: WHITE --> YELLOW
  • 1.00 mm, change color: YELLOW --> BLUE
  • 1.20 mm, change color: BLUE --> RED
  • 1.40 mm, change color: RED --> BLACK

For you information, the color I used for my print are pretty close to the following #hex:

WHITE: #fffbf6
YELLOW: #f7c500
BLUE: #0f52ba
RED: #cc0002
BLACK: #000000

I printed this picture on a MK4S with:

  • 0.4 nozzle
  • layer height 0.20 SPEED preset, changing only perimeter generator to CLASSIC instead of ARACHNE
  • no MMU but manual color changes

The result is pretty good even if the "pixel size" (0.9mm) is challenging for a 0.4 nozzle; if you look closely the "pixels" are not perfect, but the point is that the photo should look good from a certain distance.

Frame

Print the following STL files with the exact saved orientation:

  • tv1990frame - front
  • tv1990frame - back
  • tv1990frame - powbutton
Assembly
  1. put the printed picture inside the rectangular hole of the frame front
  2. assemble the frame back with the front inserting the connectors in the holes
  3. insert the TV power button inside the frame front hole

N.B.:

All the holes have a tolerance of 0.5mm, hence the connectors and the power button should enter easily depending on the accuracy of the printer. In case of problems (too loose or too hard to insert) either use some glue or try to sand the connectors.
