Introducing Addy Buddy – A Vertical Column Addition Teaching Aid, a 3D-printed tool designed to make learning vertical column addition fun and interactive! Built using the popular Gridfinity system as a size guideline, this teaching aid is perfect for introducing and reinforcing the concept of place value in addition, helping learners gain confidence and accuracy in their math skills.
Components:
1. Guide:
- Dimensions: 298.29mm (width) x 212.14mm (length) x 6mm (height)
- Gridfinity Layout: 7 width x 5 length tiles.
- Features:
- Top Row: Includes a 6mm protruding in-filled nameplate (“Addy Buddy”) for branding and added rigidity.
- Second Row: The seventh block features a 6mm protruding in-filled decorative element for a touch of flair.
- Bottom Row: Columns 1, 3, 5, and 7 feature 1.5mm in-fills with cutouts labeled ‘Th’ (Thousands), ‘H’ (Hundreds), ‘T’ (Tens), and ‘U’ (Units) for place value guidance.
- Bar Modifications:
- Horizontal bars removed between blocks 1 & 2, 3 & 4, and 5 & 6 in the second row.
- Vertical bars removed in columns 2, 4, and 6 between blocks 2, 3, 4, and 5.
- These modifications allow smooth sliding of number tiles for interactive learning.
2. Number Tiles:
- Dimensions: 36mm x 36mm x 8mm with 2mm deep cutouts for the numbers 0–8 (6 can be used as a 9).
- Features:
- Designed for easy handling and sliding.
- Filament color change at the cutout layer enhances visibility and recognition.
Printing Instructions:
- Scale: The design was printed at 70% (guide & numbers) to fit a Creality Ender-3 V3 SE build plate (220mm x 220mm). Scaling adjustments can be made based on your printer’s build size.
- Material: I utilised PLA, using two different colour combinations for working numbers and answer numbers (eight of each working number, seven of each answer number, 6 and 9 are the same to save time and filament).
- Infill: A 15% infill provides optimal strength and stability.
- Adhesion: I printed all elements with a brim to ensure proper adhesion and avoid warping, particularly the guide).
Usage Instructions:
Vertical column addition is a step-by-step method of adding numbers arranged in columns based on their place values. This guide progresses from simple concepts for beginners to more advanced steps for accuracy and understanding.
1. What is Vertical Column Addition?
- "Vertical" means arranging numbers one below the other in columns.
- Align numbers carefully by place value: units, tens, hundreds, thousands.
- Proper alignment ensures correct addition and avoids errors.
2. Steps for Vertical Column Addition (Beginner-Level)
- Start from the Rightmost Column (Units):
- Always begin adding from the rightmost side (units column).
- Move leftward to the tens, hundreds, and thousands.
- Handling Empty Placeholders:
- If one number has fewer digits, leave blank spaces in the missing columns to maintain alignment.
- Add Column by Column:
- Add the digits in each column, one column at a time.
- Place the sum below the column.
- Carry Over if Needed:
- If the sum of a column is more than 9, place the units digit in the column and slide the tens digit to the next column.
- Example: 7 + 8 = 15, so place 5 in the units place and slide 1 to the tens column.
- Continue Until All Columns Are Added:
- Include the carried-over number in the next column's addition.
- Finalise the Answer:
- After all columns are added, the bottom row will indicate the total.
3. Example Problem
- Add 365 + 1798:
- Units: 5 + 8 = 13. Place 3 and slide over 1.
- Tens: 1 + 6 + 9 = 16. Place 6 and slide over 1.
- Hundreds: 1 + 3 + 7 = 11. Place 1 and slide over 1.
- Thousands: 1 + 1 = 2. Place 2.
- Final Answer: 2163.
4. Key Reminders
- Always add from right to left.
- Keep your work neat and aligned.
- Double-check carry-over digits to avoid errors.
