A very serviceable hotend assembly, with a tilting z home mechanism. You could adapt it for any cartesian style printer.

My main design consideration was make an easily serviceable hotend assembly. Its made out of 4 main parts: X carriage, belt fix, main body and cooling parts..

I used parts that I could gather for cheap, for example a MGW9HC linear bearing. Its adaptable to any MGN, if you put a request I'll do it for you. Its crucial to leave the rubber rollers on the X axis at least for the clicky mechanism to work properly.

The main body incorporates a D2F switch, and a tilting mechanism, so basically you can do the z homing with it. While you could use it for bed mesh, I do not recommend it on cartesian (ender3 like) machines. it could bend the bed while probing on the side. If you only use it in the middle, for z homing it wont cause a problem.

Also I recommend using double Z drive! I have used mine with original single sided z drive, but it bends the X axis badly, producing inaccurate readings. Check out my BELTED DOUBLE Z MOD WITH A SINGLE STEPPER mod ;)

If you like cheapo mods, make sure to like this design. I’ll keep up the good work.

Hardware used for this project:

  1. A stepper of your choice (i used an ldo pancake)
  2. BMG extruder (i used a clone.. works perfect, but the inner axle wears out fast.. )
  3. V6/Volcano (you could use any hotend, that comed with the traditional clamp mount. I like the short block V6)
  4. 1pcs D2F switch
  5. A few m3 screws
  6. 2 old extruder springs (cut to the size, so you can tilt the extruder, but still stiff.. trial and error, hence you need 2 springs)
  7. Some linear bearing (MGW09 if you want different contact me)
  8. 404010 hotend fan (standard ender3)
  9. As per parts cooling you got 2 choices: 404020, or a salvaged afterburner cooling

    + Double Z drive: liiiiiink

Recommended material: PETG/ABS. Probably PLA will do it as a final resolve, but it has a higher chance of warping near the hotend.

Layer height: 0.2mm

Nozzle: 0.4mm

Some of the models require supports. I recommend downloading the 3mf files, so you can see the custom supports i made for them

Speaking about performance, the parts cooling could handle a double side mod.. Currently using the Voron version, and the opposite side lacks cooling.. Its fine for larger prints, only the intricate less than 1cm prints show deffect.

The Z endstop works just fine, and the head is stable enough. I recommend using virtual endstop on X axis. It really is awesome.

I print with a max of 150mm/s currently at 4500 mm/s2.. The accel is a bottleneck, but its fine for everyday printing. I mainly use it for prototyping. The hotend assy will keep up with these speeds!

I will publish the other mods that you can spot on the pictures.
