INTRO:

This is the Shrub Shield, a modular mounting system for nylon straps that can make ANYTHING into a shield! Requires no sewing and uses cheap, readily available materials!

Anything can be used as a shield material, as long as it is reasonably safe and can be carried comfortably. I have only used plastic bin lids so far, but there are a wide variety of great options! The nylon webbing is very comfortable for long-term wear, and the printed parts are designed to be durable enough to withstand heavy use!

MATERIALS:

Materials required for one strap, double all numbers for a shield of two straps!

Imperial:

4x #10 washers

4x #10 button head machine screws, 3/8" long*

4x #10 nuts

1.5 feet of 1.5" nylon webbing

Protective foam**

Metric:

4x M5 washers

4x M5 button head machine screws, 10mm long*

4x M5 nuts

0.5 meter of 40mm nylon webbing

Protective foam**

* The length of the screw should be altered to match the thickness of your shield material. The specified screws are for a shield that is 3/32" (2mm) thick, like a standard plastic bin lid.

** Protective foam is critical for safety when using a shield at a public game! For the pictured shields, I used 3/4" (19mm) pipe insulation foam. However, anything can be used as long as it's reasonably thick and protects the edge!

PRINTING:

For one strap:

1x Ladder Lock Buckle

1x Strap Adjuster

2x Strap Anchor

All parts should be printed as solid as possible to ensure strength. Ideally 5 walls or more, and 10 or more top/bottom layers.

ASSEMBLY:

Tools needed:

Screwdiver

Drill (or other method of making holes in your material)

Scissors

Glue, for foam lining

Steps:

Please also reference the video and photos provided in the gallery!

  1. Feed the webbing through one Anchor. The webbing should be under the inner bar and over the outer bar.
  2. Feed the webbing through the first and second slots of the Buckle, with the tongue facing away from the Anchor.
  3. Take the free end of the webbing that was fed through the Buckle, and slide the Strap Adjuster on.
  4. Take the end of the webbing that was fed through the Anchor, and feed it through the Adjuster. Reposition everything so that the Adjuster has minimal slack, and is close to the Anchor.
  5. Slide the longer end of the webbing through the second Anchor.
  6. Loop the webbing back, and feed it through the second and third slots of the Buckle. The tongue of the Buckle should point inwards, and the strap should now be easily adjustable by pulling on the webbing fed through the Buckle. The strap assembly is now complete!
  7. Secure the strap assembly on your arm.
  8. Place the strap assembly on your shield material, and reposition so that the Anchors are in a flat, comfortable position.
  9. Mark the holes for the Anchors.
  10. Drill the holes.
  11. Use the fasteners and screwdriver to bolt the strap assembly to the shield.
  12. Line the edges of the shield with foam, and cover the screw heads with a soft material like hot glue or foam.
  13. Your Shrub Shield is complete!!
