Print in PETG! PLA parts may crack when pressing them into the bearings.

Thanks to download & ❤!

I needed to borrow my wife's soft tape measure, and found it wadded into a ball in her box of sewing items.  This model is my solution to the problem.

The spool uses planetary gears and bearings to give efficient operation, while being only slightly larger than the spool itself.  A 3m/3yard tape measure fits on the spool. One full turn of the lid (bottom_plate.stl) pulls in ½ meter/20 inches of the tape!  Use the 20mm parts for ¾" wide tape measures.  Use the 13mm parts for ½" tape measures.  Note that the ½" spool is untested, but I checked the model carefully → it should be OK.

The bearings are 3 each 693ZZ bearings for the planet gears, and 2 each 608 (skateboard) bearings for the sun gear/spool.

Assembly:

  1. Slide the metal tab of the large end of your tape into the slot in the spool, then wrap.
  2. Press the two skate board bearings into the bottom and top of the spool.
  3. Press the 693 bearings into the planet gears, then mount onto the lid (bottom_plate.stl).  The gears are 3mm wide & the bearings are 4mm wide.  The bearing should stick out of the gear by 1mm when installed onto the lid.
  4. Pull the tape end through the slot in the main body (top plate.stl) and then press the non-gear side of the spool onto the center stud.
  5. Push both halves together, the planet gears will align themselves to the sun gear and ring gear.

The spool is held together by the tight fit of the main body, spool, and lid into the 608 bearings.  If you drop it, it's probably going to come apart.

Print notes:

  1. I recommend printing the spool with extra walls, 3 or even 4 for PLA.  Otherwise, it may crack when pressing in the bearings.  I printed several of these in PETG with zero issues.
  2. I got great results on my Mk4 and XL – tight fits into the 608 bearings.  Printing on the Bambu X1C, the fit was not as tight as I would like.
  3. Print the planet gears with internal brim.
  4. The spool needs support, of course.  I used organic supports on buildplate only.
  5. 15% gyroid infill for all parts.
