I planned to debug an ESP-04 and for that I wanted to be able to swap between different ESP's and needed easy access to flashing them without soldering tiny wires to the PCBs.

Changelog

2025-01-26: Uploaded first public ESP-04 R4 revision.

Additional Parts

  •  7x P100-B1 pogo pins
    • The holes are designed for P100-B1 pogo pins, where the tip has a diameter of 1.0mm and the shaft of 1.36mm.
    • You need 7x for flashing to connect: VCC, GND, RX, TX, CH_PD/EN, GPIO0, GPIO15
    • Obviously the more GPIOs you want to connect the more you need.
    • Optionally you need another pogo pin to install for GPIO13 to put the same amount of pressure on both sides of the chip.
  • 2x pin headers 7x1 with a pin pitch of 2.54mm
  • Small wire, I used 0.4mm enameled wire
  • 3x 10k resistor to pull up CH_PD/Chip enable, GPIO0; pull down GPIO15

Printing

  • Material: I used PETG to be a bit more heat resistant while soldering
  • Nozzle: 0.25mm, I tried using a 0.4mm but the holes for the pogo pins are printed a lot better with the smaller nozzle
  • Layer height: 0.12mm
  • Infill: Unimportant, I used 15%, Gyroid
  • Perimeters: Unimportant, I used 3, the default for the 0.12mm profile

Assembly

  • It's easiest to push in the pogo pins from the outside first.
    • You can also install more pogo pins after you soldered already by inserting them from the center outwards.
  • Push them in until the shaft hits the elevated section where the ESP will be placed.
  • When the ESP is installed the pogo pins should be compressed by 1.85mm, from orginal 8.35mm down to 6.5mm.
    • My tested version used 3.35mm compression which is too much force. Please leave a comment with your experience
  • Next step is to install the pin headers
  • Solder wires from the pogo pins to the pin headers.
  • Solder wires with resistors to pull down/up the other required pins.
    • I forgot I need 3 resistors, would've made the design differently if I remembered that, put it worked out in the end.

Modifications

I should be able to modify my model for other ESP modules, leave a comment if I should create one for different layouts.
