POE SML Smart energy meter
While experimenting with a ready to go IR smart meter reading head, I realized that the Wi-Fi signal in my main electrical distribution box, which is made of metal and located in the basement, was anything but good. But I didn't want to buy and install an extra access point just to read my electricity meter. After a long period of research, I unfortunately only found a few solutions on how to implement the whole thing via POE. So I sat down and overengineered the whole problem:
The whole reading is based on bitShake SmartMeterReader UART IR, but it should work with any other standard IR head. Unfortunately I only had this one lying around. You can find similar ones on eBay for around 10 euros.
The PoE board is an Olimex POE (ESP32-POE) (not ISO!).
There are pre-built Tasmota images available for this board, but I decided to use ESPHome (because I finally wanted to try it out and use Home Assistant for all home automation anyway). The working Yaml file is available here.
Thanks
Many thanks to Marek for his DIN rail holder, which is used in this project in a slightly modified way to keep everything in place. Great work!
Shop
If you want to support my work somehow, you can have a look at my stickershop, which was actually planed as a shop selling electronics, but somehow we ended with stickers.
