Description

Are you interested in cars? Do you like motorsports? Do you long for more Group B rally content because all you can find is edits of it to the same 3 songs? Well then this model of the Audi Quattro is perfect for you. While it may not move like a real car, you can stare at it lovingly as it sits of your shelf, or just pretend it moves as you roll it back and forth on the floor.

Design Prompt

Make something that showcases your Solidworks skills.

Design Choices

  1. The Original Idea
    1. the initial idea for this project came from a different project, and that was to make a car tape dispenser. The idea ended up getting scrapped, and there were a lot of changes that were made to the start idea. This is how far we got with the original idea, and I'll explain all the changes I made going forwards.

2. Actually Modeling the car

  1. for the first car model I had made an extrude to put an image of the car on to trace over so the shape was correct. But this meant that when I made the extrude for the car it wasn't centered around any plane which made it really difficult to work with. So I reversed the direction of the extrude for the base so that the sketch would be on the front plane.

2. Once again with the extrude, I made sure that this time it was set to midplane so that the front plane would be going right through the extrudes. This way mirroring the feature down the line would be much easier.

3. The next steps were pretty much the same as the original, making the same cuts on the side of the car. This time, though, since it wasn't going to be a tape dispenser, I didn't need to include the cut that I made on the top of the car the first time. I had originally mirrored these cuts right after I made them, but I ended up deleting that because it made more sense to do it late down the line

4. I decided though that the car from the front looked awfully bland without the cut, so I added in a cut for the windshield to add some for dimension and interest to it. It really helped bring the car to life.

5. Once again, for the sake of adding more dimension, I added a cut to the back to make it feel more life-like.

6. The front still felt too bland so I added in head lights. They're not 100% accurate to the original car, but I thought they looked nice.

7. Finally I mirrored all of the cuts so the sides of the car were even expect for the fillets. I soon realized that you cannot mirror fillets, so I had to go back and reorganize everything so that the mirror came before the fillets. And then after that I edited all the fillets and manually selected the lines on each side of the car so that the sides were identical.

8. The underside of the car looked weird and funny because the tires were connected, and that is not how cars work so I made the decision to add in another cut so make the appearance of wheels.

9. I made made one of the logos on one side of the car, and went to mirror it, but realized when I mirrored it that it was facing the wrong direction. So like any sane person would I copied the sketch I used for the original logo and pasted it on the other side of the car and lined it all up so they were facing the right way. Was there a better way to do this? Prolly.

Before:                                                                         After:

10. Finally, I added this little edge thing to the car because the real counter part of it also has something similar to that and I wanted to get them as similar as I could. And rims. To the tires. Because it makes them look like tires. I forgot what rims were while doing that step.

And finally….

yeah, that's a car.

Big improvements from the original concept.
