Summary:

As a final project for my engineering class, we were given a variety of options of designs to work on. I chose to create a “2D” piece of art that sits on a display stand. The design I went with is the logo of Brighton and Hove Albion, a British soccer/football team known as the Seagulls. The 2d disc is 10cm x 10cm and about 2 cm thick, while the stand adds around 1 cm of height. This crest can be displayed on a desk, shelf, cabinet, or other creative location.

Problem Statement:

Design a “2D” placard with detail entirely on one side, along with an attached stand.

Assembly/Construction:

The main challenge in assembling this model is the small dimensions of some of the details. use of a strong glue is a must to attach the pieces together, and some pieces may need to be reprinted.

Design Choices:

The initial challenge in creating the detailed sketch of the logo came from reproducing the curves that formed the seagull in the center. The 3-point arc tool was used constantly, with many arcs being only slightly different from straight lines.

One surprising obstacle was not being able to use the text sketch tool to create the letters around the outside of the logo; the custom font, spacing, and arc of the writing proved too specific for Solidworks, so more use of the line and arc tools was necessary.

The small blue lines separating the wings of the seagull from the white circular background provided a challenge that didn't quite reach a satisfying resolution, the importance of maintaining the shape while not introducing a huge border between the sections would be an aspect of the project I'd look to improve in the future.

After creating the stand behind the disc, the legs of the stand were filleted in order to create a more connected model.

The coloring of the model was chosen to match the original crest as closely as possible, and the stand was made blue to mirror the most common color in the design.
