The Ender 3 v3 and v3+ have 2 problems with the filament system :

  • The supply tube can be bent when homing → could cause the filament to break
  • The filament runout sensor moves up and down → often causes the filament to slide off the roll, and this placing is fastidious when changing filament

Many users and reviewers pointed out these problems, and these 2 pieces remediates to the issues. It allows to mount the filament sensor and tubing to the top of the printer while remaining compact. It is easier to work with and more reliable.
The second piece is to replace the cable holder integrated on the sensor, which is needed for the printing head.

I made these pieces in CATIA V5, feel free to adapt/customize it as you want ! The dimensions are in jpeg too if needed.

You will need :

  • 2x M3 bolts
  • 1x cable extender (JST XH 3 pins female to male )

HOW TO INSTALL

  1. First, print both pieces
  2. Retract and remove your filament. Move the roll away.
  3. Disconnect the filament tube and disconnect the sensor's cable
  4. Remove the 2 screws holding the filament sensor
  5. Under the sensor there are 2 other bolts holding a plastic plate to the z axis of the gantry. Remove them and take the plastic plate
  6. Attach the side_cable_mount piece to the z axis with your 2 extra M3 bolts (important : the open side facing outward)
  7. Slide the printing head to the opposite side of the printing area
  8. Clamp the cable into the hook
  9. Attach the plastic plate to the top_mount_runout_sensor piece with the existing bolts. These are self-tapping holes, you might want to screw the bolts once without the plate and then attaching the plate
  10. Reinstall the sensor on the plastic plate.
  11. Clamp it on the top of the printer
  12. Attach the sensor cable extender, you can use the cable groove behind the sensor
  13. Install your filament, enjoy !
