What you will need to make the adapter:

  • High temp resistant filament(ABS, ASA, Nylon, etc)

  • M3 threaded inserts (M3*5.7*4.6)
  • M3x14mm bolt (you can also reuse the fan bracket mount screws as you will have 2 leftover)

  • Bambu lab style hotend that has a thermistor + heater combo for the X1/X1C

  • Soldering Iron

  • JST-PH 2.0 2pin male connector
  • The printed part

Optional:

During my testing I found that cooling performance was not amazing, so I also made a new air guide module, with replaceable fan ducts. For anybody doing this mod you may want to print this as well. You can find the download here:
https://www.printables.com/model/1200371-ankermake-m5c-printable-air-guide-module

How to print the part:

  • Nozzle Size: 0.4mm

  • Layer height: 0.15mm

  • Infill: 20% rectilinear

  • Supports: required (I used snug supports with a rectilinear interlaced interface pattern)

  • You want this part to be dimensionally accurate so use a slower print speed/print profile

How to assemble the part:

  • Use the images below as reference for how to install the threaded inserts
  • The threaded inserts must go into the larger diameter holes.

  • You may have to use a metal spudger/some piece of metal to keep the wall from bulging out when installing the inserts.

  • Once the inserts are installed, ensure that the screws go in parallel to the part, if they do not the hotend will not be straight. (it doesn't need to be perfect, but it should be close)

  • Here are some example images of a hotend installed on the adapter:

Once Everything is looking good, you now need to alter the thermistor that came with your Bambu Labs Style hotend.

How to alter the thermistor:

Side note: I would have preferred to make an adapter instead of altering the thermistor directly, but I have only tested the altered thermistor and I have not yet had a chance to make the adapter for the existing connector. if you wish to make an adapter, the bambu labs thermistor uses a JST GH 1.25 2 pin connector, but I have not tested this.

  • You must cut the thermistors existing connector off, and solder on your JST-PH 2.0 2 pin connector, polarity does not matter. Ensure you insulate the connection.

  • Once it is properly modified, you can install and test.

Assemble the hotend:

  • Follow bambus guide/watch a video for this step

Installation of the hotend:

  • You can follow ankermakes installation instructions for this step, pretty much everything from here on out is plug and play, your only concern is cable management. keep in mind the throat cooling fan/air guide module will only use 2 screws rather than the original 4.

  • If you're not seeing a temp reading for the nozzle in the app, your thermistor is not functioning, you should get a warning on the app aswell. Double check your connections.

  • Ensure filament can be extruded.

Things you should do after a successful install:

  • Run auto bed leveling job after verifying heating, temp reporting, and extrusion are working

  • Run a Z offset calibration print, and ensure your Z offset is correct

  • You could run some test prints/calibration prints but this mod is mostly plug and play as long as you use the default profiles you shouldn't run into any major bottlenecks.

There is an alternate version that is designed to be either CNC machined, or SLM metal 3D printed, I have not tried this design out, but it is there if someone wants to give it a go.
