“Cockmill” or “windmill”, standing on a pole to show wind direction & speed.
Inspired from wako biplane for a nice rendering.
Large model, 640 x 640 mm.
Not suitable for small printer, needs a large 350x350mm board for the wings.
Some parts were made on my prusa MarK3 but wings need the larger plate from another machine (sovol SV08 in my case).
Preferably made of ASA because of better resistance to UVs.
…But ASA very difficult to handle, even if you have a closed cabinet. Therefore, this model is rather challenging to build. I have personally used ASA (yellow parts) PETG (black parts), PLA (white and red parts) and ABS (green propeller) as a convenience. I am happy with the final rendering.
Wheels are not given as STL because I already had them. You can easily extract them if needed from the original drawing. these are D. 72mm wheels.
Original drawing is made using designspark mechanical, of which a free version is available. You will get it by unzipping the zip file, as “rsdocx” files not allowed here.
You can then modify or extract your stl as convenient.
Needs in addition :
two threaded rods M6 x 495 and M6 x 465 and a few M6 nuts. (fuselage)
make a notch in these rods at one extremity to turn them with a flat screwdriver.
Install two inserts to lock them in the tail.
two threaded rods M5 x 400 and 4 nuts (upper wing)
a few M3 screws and 2 M4 screws for the wheels.
some M3 inserts and M3 screws for the wing links.
Inserts: I have used a few thermal inserts , M3 (wheels), M4 (Rudder and wheels) and a couple of M6 in the fuselage.
roller bearings : these are the usual bearings for roller wheels, D22mm / d8mm / L7mm,
You will need them for the propeller, motor and vertical axis. A set of 10 comes handy.
Model not very easy to mount, but I made one, so you can build it as well, with a bit of patience.
Propeller: Note; the profile is adapted to a windmill, not to a real propeller. Runs quite well using a total of 4 roller bearings + 2 on the engine. There is a specific drawing for this part. No screws, it holds by means of the roller bearings only. This part is made in ABS for me, but PETG could work as well. Only issue is , again, resistance to UV & external elements.
The front dome is fitted with an M8 nut, installed using a warm soldering iron.
Newpropeller added on july 2025. single part, needs only 2 bearings.
Pilot not included in the files, you will find one at your convenience.
I try to use a minimum of supports. generally infill is 15%, 3 layers.
I have put some additional 3mf files. those marked with prusa are for a prusa MK3, if not they are for the SV08 printer.
