About the Mil Mi-8

The Mil Mi-8 is a medium twin-turbine helicopter, designed in the 1960s and introduced into the Soviet Air Force in 1968. Russian production of the aircraft model still continues. In addition to its most common role as a transport helicopter, the Mi-8 is also used as an airborne command post, armed gunship, and reconnaissance platform.

The Mi-8 is the world's most-produced helicopter, with over 17,000 units used by over 50 countries. As of 2015, when combined with the related Mil Mi-17, the two helicopters are the third most common operational military aircraft in the world.

About the model itself

The idea to create a helicopter was given to me by one of my followers. I did my best to create a model that resembles a real machine as much as possible, while being easy to print.

Printing

  • High quality settings, 0.12mm-0.15mm layer height (I am using 0.12mm)
  • 0.4mm nozzle
  • NO supports
  • 100% infill
  • There's no need for a raft because of the fixed plates on some parts
  • Printing (on my 3D printer) takes from 1h to 1h 20minutes depending on settings, printer efficiency etc.
  • I recommend NOT to scale down the model, because some parts (air intakes, engines, nose) might be deformed, or not even printed, because they will become too thin for the slicer and printer. I also do not guarantee good results when scaling up.

Asembly:

The helicopter is not a print-in-place model and it have to be asembled using a super glue.

First we need to build the fuselage.

To do this we need to get rid of the fixed supports and the plate under the tail section.

Then we need to simply glue those two parts together.

Then we need to glue the tail rotor.

The tail rotor can be glued on the left or right side, depending on the version we are interested in.

The last step is attaching the main rotor.

To do this, insert the pin through the hole in the rotor, put a small drop of glue on the end of the pin and place it in the hole at the top of the fuselage. Be careful not to use too much glue so as not to glue the rotor.

Unfortunately the model is much more fragile than the other jet fighters I have and, to be honest, it will propably not survive too many falls on the ground.

Additional information

If you enjoy my micro jets and helicopters please leave a nice comment. I am working on some new arcrafts I will be uploading soon. I would be grateful if you would share with me your ideas for new fighters or something completely different. I am open to your suggestions.

I would just like to point out that I am not a professional and I treat creating models for 3D printing as a hobby. Therefore, I am asking for your understanding towards my work.

I wish you successful printing and lots of fun!
