This protective case for a kindle ebook reader (11th generation) comes with a slim footprint. I designed it in a way that the hinges can easily be printed separately. The case is assembled by snapping on the hinges to the top and bottom shells. This makes it possible to print the whole case in two steps on smaller printers such as an Ender 3. Also, if a hinge breaks it it's easy to repair by just printing the needed part :)

Steps, assembly and use:

  1. print the top shell, together with two instances of the slotted hinge
  2. print the bottom shell
  3. snap on the hinges to the shells
  4. Orient the case just like you would open a book (hinges on the left) and inset your kindle into the case. Protrusions at the bottom keep the power switch of the kindle from being pressed accidentally.

For those of you with more print volume available I also provide a print in place version. But take it with a grain of salt because I couldn't test it. In this case the hinges come without slots.

I printed all parts in PLA. If you encounter that the slotted hinges are too stiff to snap on easily you can also print them in PETG. However, in my case it was an easy fit and required only little pressure.

My print settings:

  • Ender 3 V2
  • 0.6mm nozzle (I'm certain the results are better with a 0.4mm nozzle)
  • 0.2mm layer height
  • 20% infill (I guess less is fine, too)

Note: Even though it works and closes nicely I think a proper locking mechanism to keep it closed is still missing. So, I consider this still work in progress.

For anyone with interest in modifying the design you can do so in onshape.
