This is a remix of a spool weight design by Interspieder, which fits a wide variety of sizes.
https://www.printables.com/model/912533-adjustable-spool-weight-6x-aa-batteries
I modified it to use 3 stacks of pennies, contained by a lid.
My intention is for use in Bambu Labs AMS.
Yes, there are already many spool weight designs, but I wasn't finding what I wanted based on these criteria:
1. I didn't want to use batteries for the weights. Pennies are my preference.
2. To maximize weight, a triple stack of pennies was desired, and that means a minimum diameter for the "core".
3. I didn't want a design that can spill the weight during install or removal.
4. I wanted as close to a "one size fits all spools" design as possible.
The original threads are unchanged, and they work very well.
In order to keep the compatibility with a wide range of spool sizes, the "flange" diameter and inner diameter are unchanged.
Interspieder states, it is suitable for:
"Hole diameter min. 51.4 mm to max. 80 mm
Width min. 53 mm to max. 100 mm"
What I changed:
1. The flange thickness was reduced to 3mm, as thicker seemed not required and perhaps any chance of side interference is reduced.
2. Instead of batteries, it now holds 3 stacks of pennies (Canadian or U.S.)
Size and composition can vary, but in my sample it held 96 pennies (approx. 230g)
The total overall weight is minimally about 340g.
3. A lid contains the pennies and prevents spillage.
4. Simple sleeves adapt to different hole diameters, as required.
Male thread (penny) portion:
Originally, I chose to use M3 heat inserts.
I used Hanglife brand M3 x D5 x L3 (Amazon), but there are many similar ones.
After choosing to share, I made a non-heat insert version where the M3 screws just create their own threads in the plastic.
Personally, I used the heat insert version, but the other should be just fine.
Lid:
There are 2 versions, almost identical.
Initially I printed (V1), countersink side up.
I tried printing it countersink side down, and it was a cleaner print.
In this orientation I had to raise the depth of the countersink .15mm though to clear the heat insert. This is V2.
That is the only difference, so choose the one you like and the orientation that pleases you.
Female thread (spool hole) portions:
There are 2 versions. (labelled, if chosen to use a contrasting filament)
1. A version that keeps the original small diameter (51.4mm) for rare cases it is required.
2. For my spools, a slightly larger diameter is more appropriate (53.5mm), and a very thin sleeve is impractical.
Sleeves:
Included are 2 sleeves with an OD of 72.5mm for a larger spool hole diameter.
There is one for each of the 2 versions of the female half.
Use:
The nicety of this spool holder is that the weight sides can be filled, sealed, and never touched again (no spillage).
There is only one size of those required, so at most you'll need 4 per AMS.
Print female halves of the desired sizes.
Likely the 53.5mm is the most versatile.
Possibly that is all that is required.
The sleeves are intended to help centre the weight, but the two sides do screw together well and sleeves may not be required.
If other sizes are required, then it is just sleeves that are changed.
A novice can make tubes pretty easily just in Tinkercad, or even permanently modify the female half.
Design to be 51.0mm tall.
I found making the sleeve ID .30mm larger than the female OD was a good fit. (51.7mm or 53.8mm)
