Flip your game on its head with this wild mechanical tile for Hextraction, the hackable, 3D printable board game.
Like the traditional Japanese water feature, the Sozu Tile has a unique threshold mechanic - the first ball to enter gets trapped, and the second throws the flipper off balance, dumping both balls out of the bottom. The Sozu then resets itself to catch and release again.
This tile is a remix of ZackFreedman's original model from Thangs.com. The original model had a base in the center of the tile to mount the bearing to. After breaking off several of them, I modified the file to remove the small base and found that if I used an M3 screw to loosely attach the bearing, the head of the screw snapped firmly into the flipper.
Printing:
- PETG or nylon is strongly recommended to reduce friction.
- Print one set of corresponding tile and flipper, making sure to select the flipper that corresponds to your ball diameter!
- A brim is recommended for the Flipper.
NOTE: The left and right versions are mirror images - their bases and flippers are NOT interchangeable.
Assembly:
- Snap a ball into the flipper.
- Use an M3x8 screw to loosely mount a 3x7x3mm ball bearing to the base, and press the flipper down evenly. You will need to apply a bit of pressure to get thew screw head to snap into the flipper. The flipper should flip freely and snap back up when pressed down.
- A little grease may be needed to work smoothly.

What is Hextraction?
Hextraction is a free board game designed for 3D printing. You download the files, make it yourself, and even mod the game pieces.
Your goal: Get a ball to the finish line, one hexagonal tile at a time. It's a bit Magic: The Gathering and Calvinball mud-wrestling in a marble maze.
The kicker: As long as something fits the slot and makes everyone happy, you can play it. You can add traps, build in mechanisms, and even write your own rules. You can even mess around with the game board itself.
It's free to play, and you can play with as many opponents as you want - or none at all. Fire up that printer and get downloading!
