Description of the model:

This is a 3D model of photo documentation system for photographing Petri plates. It uses a LED ring with diameter of 20 cm as a source of illumination (these rings are pretty common on the market and are freely available). The printed 3D model serves as a photography hood and a camera stand. The 3D model is designed to fit on the LED ring. The model can be printed in two parts (easier to print without support) or can be printed as a whole object. If you print it in two separate part you will have to glue them with superglue or epoxy glue. The upper cylinder is made few millimeters wider to have enough surface area to glue it on the bottom part. The upper part of this specific model is designed with a hole that will fit the objective of Canon PowerShot A490 but you can remodel the hole in order to fit your camera of smartphone.

Photography procedure:

1) Place a square sheet of black or white paper on the table. This will depend on culture media or organism you have used.

2) Place 3 bottoms of Petri plates in a triangular configuration.

3) Place the LED ring with the illuminated part on the Petri plates bottoms. This provides more diffusive light and the Petri plate is better illuminated.

4) Place the 3D printed photo documentation system on the LED ring. You have to fit the groove of the 3D model in the LED ring.

5) Turn on the LED ring. You can use warm, cold or daylight depending on what you will photograph.

5) Make photos with your camera or smartphone. Then process the photo. You will have to cut only the Petri plate from the photo and then make a white or black background with your preferred photo processing software.

Idea source:

The main idea of this 3D model is inspired by the research article “Photograph registration of petri dishes in high quality and image editing of microbiological assays” where the authors have made the system with cardboard cylinder, cardboard rectangle for smartphone stand and a light diffuser from a water bottle. I just designed a more convenient 3D model for 3D printing.
