Hello Everyone

I love the LYWSD03MMC temperature and humidity sensors from Xiaomi because they have a compact size, a display, and are inexpensive. I had them connected directly to Home Assistant, which caused the batteries to last a maximum of 3 months. I decided to modify them to use a CR123A battery. However, I ultimately chose to use 16340 / RCR123A rechargeable batteries with a voltage of 3V. I also flashed new firmware that changes the communication protocol from Bluetooth to Zigbee. This allows the sensors to be paired with Zigbee2MQTT. After two months of use, the battery level is still at 100%.

For the modification, you need to print a new back cover for the sensor and a battery holder. There are two types of mounting for the battery holder :

  • Vertical – The sensor will stand upright at a 90° angle
  • Horizontal – The sensor will be tilted at a 30° angle

The back cover and the battery holder should be connected using pins, which also help to align both parts correctly. If necessary, use a universal cyanoacrylate glue or adjust the pins in your slicer along the X and Y axes. (See the Photo Gallery)

When you complete the project, please share a photo and a comment. Thank you and have a nice day.

IMPORTANT - READ :

  • Maximum Wire Diameter 1.6mm
  • Solder the wires to the contact plates before inserting them into the battery holder

Dimensions of the Battery Contact Plate used for this project:

  • Plate Dimensions without Pin : 10 x 9 x 0.3mm width x height x thickness
    Pin Dimensions : 2.6 x 6 x 0.3mm width x height x thickness
