Saint Sebastian
Saint Sebastian was an early Christian martyr who lived in the 3rd century AD. While the exact details of his life are debated, the traditional account holds that he was born in Gaul (modern-day France) and became a soldier in the Roman army, eventually rising to the rank of captain in the Praetorian Guard under Emperor Diocletian.
Sebastian secretly converted many soldiers and was discovered to be a Christian. Diocletian, unaware of Sebastian's faith and valuing his service, was enraged by this betrayal. He ordered Sebastian to be executed by archers. Tied to a stake, Sebastian was shot with arrows but miraculously survived.
A pious widow named Irene nursed him back to health. Instead of fleeing, Sebastian boldly presented himself again to Diocletian, denouncing the emperor's persecution of Christians. This time, Diocletian ordered him to be beaten to death. His body was thrown into a sewer, but another Christian woman, Lucina, recovered it and buried him in the catacombs.
Saint Sebastian is venerated as a saint in the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. His feast day is celebrated on January 20th in the Roman Catholic Church and on December 18th in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
