A mold for a 640 gram, 1.65lb SOLID chocolate egg. Why you ask? Why not!

Disclaimer: Please use food safe PLA or TPU! (Or at least research a bit before trying without)

Notes:

The normal egg mold is ~64 grams and is sized to about a normal egg. The large one is ~640 grams and is scaled to about 211% or 2.11 times the size. I also adjusted the pegs in the larger one for better tolerances so if you plan on scaling up more, than you should use the big one as a starting point.

Necessary Materials:

  • Rubber bands

  • 3D Printed Mold

  • Melting chocolate or chocolate chips

Print Settings:

Orientation: The models are already oriented in the optimal position, but if you would like to scale even bigger you could turn them on their ends to get the maximum size.

Layer Height: I used 0.2mm but you can use whatever you want as this model doesn't require much detail.

Perimeters/Walls: 4 (Doesn't matter as you don't need that much strength)

Support: No

Filament: I used food safe PLA, you can use TPU for easier mold removal but PLA works great as it is not that hard to remove the egg. My settings are optimized for PLA so do what works for you.

Instructions:

Melt the chocolate (chocolate chips or melting chocolate works) in a microwave at high heat for 1 minute, then mix, then 1 more minute. You can add a bit of oil if it is too thick but most of the time that is not a problem. Then use rubber bands to secure the 2 halves together and use a spoon to put the chocolate in the chamfer at the top and gently push it down. For the smaller mold you can also use a syringe if it is easier. Please make sure that the chocolate settles into the mold as it will pile up and make it seem like there is much more than there actually is. Just gently shake/settle it into the edges. Once the mold is prepped, than you can refrigerate. For the small mold, 1 hour was plenty of time, but I would check in on it as sometimes the chocolate will settle during refrigeration. If this is the case, than you can fill it up with some more if you want to. For the bigger one I would recommend refrigerating overnight as it takes a while to solidify. As with the smaller one, I would check on it and maybe refill it if the chocolate goes below the top of the mold.

Enjoy!
