I really liked Pietogramma's original design, but trying to assemble it was challenging, especially placing the window and trying to secure an LED on the front of the body. and to print the top overhang, you'd invariably need to use supports.
But the main reason for the redesign was to add two improvements:
- add a Hall Effect sensor to “zero” the compass on startup
- illuminate the numbers from the inside by adding LED's above the barrel (and printing the barrel in white and covering with black vinyl cut with a vinyl cutter
Parts:
- 24BJY48 Stepper motor and driver (Amazon)
- Hall effect Sensor module (Amazon)
- 6 x 6mm M3 screws
- 1 small strong magnet
Notes:
- Print all parts as oriented in the STL. Depending on your bed adhesion/filament, you might consider using mouse ears on the corners.
- When printing the base, add a tree support. I used manual tree support in Orca. See the attached image. The barrel will require normal supports.
- I also attached the design I used to cut the vinyl. Because printers have different tolerances and so do vinyl cutters, you'll have to do some trial and error to get the right size for your build. I scaled mine to 5.8" lengthwise.
- You'll need to glue the magnet to the inside of the barrel and play around with the position. It is typically going to be around “W”, but mine worked best right at 260°.
- I noticed that my Hall effect switch responds better to one pole of the magnet than the other. So do some testing before closing your compass and permanently gluing the magnet.
- I've included a screenshot of my Mobiflight settings but you'll have to adjust this to your own setup. If you have no idea where to start, Captain Bob has a very old but still useful guide on youtube (Dude's probably done with college now :D)
