Shape Your Norse Saga with the Viking longship HyperX Mouse shell, with removable magnetic mast.
Leaning into the title of the contest this quickly came to mind, it took a little effort to put together, but I am happy with how it turned out.
Here are the stl parts and other things required:
Main parts
- Bow - the front of the boat which includes the front of the chassis
- Stern - the back of the boat
- Shield - shields to go along the port and starboard sides
Unmodified parts, included for completeness
- Button covers
- Side front button
- Side back button
Also required
- Glue
(Optional) sail parts
- Sail
- Mast
- Mast base
- Yard - the beam that goes across the top of the sail
(Optional) parts for sail
- A 1.5mm 4-6mm pin or 1 tiny piece of 1.75mm filament
- Two 3mm round magnets
- Something not too thick to use as rope. I used embrodery thread.
Suggested print settings
- Nozzle: 0.4mm
- Filament: Matte PLA
- Layer height: 0.15mm
- Perimeters/walls: 2
- Top and bottom layers: 4
- Infill: 15% (little impact - very little is used)
- Infill Pattern: gyroid
Every STL has been provided in the orientation in which I printed them (including the parts I have not otherwise modified).
Bow
Organic/tree supports for the dragon head and fuzzy skin painted on the hull of the ship.
Stern
Organic/tree supports for the overhanging parts and fuzzy skin painted on the hull of the ship. Printing it in this orientation makes the fuzzy skin direction aligned with how wood is aligned in real ships and we see more layer lines on the top, which is actually good when we are going for a wooden appearance. If you are inserting a magnet for the optional mast, add a pause around 36.8mm.
Shield
Print 16 shields. You can either paint them, or add two filament colour changes - one for the main front colour and another for the edge and center parts of each shield.
(Optional) sail
I added six evenly spaced colour changes and a healthy 6mm brim.
(Optional) mast, mast base, yard
I printed these with a 2mm brim, it may not have been required as they are only a few layers thick, so I'd say use your own judgement.
Assembly
Glue the shields in place. The connectors are just enough to center them and provide more surface for glue. It is more solid than it looks; I dropped my mouse whilst taking pictures and none broke off!
If you are making the mast, drop a magnet in the mast base, test the orientation and then glue in the mast. Glue the yard to the top of the sail. Add a little glue in the hole and then insert a pin or piece of filament (or end of a cocktail stick, etc.) through the mast, sail and yard. Thread the “rope” through the sail and the hoop on the mast base (I used an embroidery needle) and tie the ends. I thought about using glue, but the little knots I think added to the realism.
2025-07-07 added alternate bow for the cabled version of the mouse.
