A specialized Gridfinity holder for two tools essential to 3D printing – digitial caliper and deburring tool – for those who like to make use of every inch of space in their drawer.

New to 3D printing, I decided my first printing project would be to get all this new 3D printing stuff organized.  And in short order (inevitably, it seems), I found myself deep down the Gridfinity rabbit hole!  Long story short, I'm going to Gridfinity the %#@! out of this house, one drawer/cabinet/shelf at a time…

I originally printed two separate tool holders for my caliper and deburring tool, using models found here on Printables.  But my caliper didn't quite fit in that tool holder – I had to deform it a bit with the heat gun, and then it was still uncomfortably tight (so tight that my caliper would keep turning on sitting in the holder, untouched).  Plus, with the the irregular shape of a caliper, the 2x6 holder had a lot of blank, unusable space around it. What's more, neither of these tool holders were stackable - you couldn't stack any bins on top when tools were in them.  Altogether enough of an excuse to try my hand in creating my own Gridfinity tool holder… And I'm pleased enough with the result to share it here with my fellow Gridfinity enthusiasts.  Please provide feedback and let me know of any issues / suggestions (this is my first shared model, so go easy on me)!

Specs / Dimensions

Gridfinity specs are in accordance with the original Gridfinity bins created by Zack Freedman.

  • bin size = 2x6x4u
  • slip-fit (glue) magnet holes (6.5 mm)

I based the caliper pocket dimensions on the original case my cheap Vinca caliper came in, which seemed quite generic - so I'd expect it to work just as well for other brands and models.

  • pocket length = 239 mm
  • pocket width (jaws section) = 80 mm
  • pocket width (digital LCD section) = 48.5 mm
  • pocket width (scale section) = 17.5 mm

I based the deburring tool pocket on my deburring tool, which either came with my printer or in some pack of 3D printing essential tools I bought - looking on Amazon it seems the width is pretty standard, and the length varies only slightly for many brands & models (which should be ok).

  • tool width = 12.15 mm / 13.8 mm at widest edges of hexagon
  • pocket width = 14.25 mm
  • tool length (without blade) = 121 mm
  • pocket length = 122.5 mm
    • note: the tool pocket is angled upward so that the tip sticks out of the pocket (thus easy to grab the tool from the holder), and a longer tool should still sit in the pocket fine - but if significantly longer it may interfere with stacking another bin on top…

The 10 slots for spare deburring blades are based on the blades that came with my deburring tool, but the size seems to be pretty standard.

  • blade diameter = ~3.1 mm
  • slot diameter = 3.5 mm
  • blade length (for reference in the pics) = 47.5 mm
    • variations in blade length should be fine, for the most part

4 slots for spare caliper batteries - LR44 battery (11.9 mm x 5.65 mm)

Additional pocket on right side of caliper for additional spare blades and/or batteries - or whatever other small item(s) you want to use it for (107 mm x 15.5 mm x 8 mm deep)

Material & Slicer Settings

I'm still pretty wet behind the ears when it comes to all the slicer settings, so I roll with pretty standard stuff (tweak for efficiency / speed as you see fit).

  • material = PLA+
  • layer height = 0.2 mm
  • wall loops, top layers, & bottom layers = 3
  • infill = 15%
  • wall generator = Arachne (may be important when it comes to the thin deburring blade slots)
  • supports = No
  • brim = Yes (I've learned all GF bins over 3 units long need brim to prevent warping)
