This model is dimensionally very similar to the kit provided by Scouts BSA.
Recommend printing with 4 perimeters to keep water out and 5-10% lightning infill to keep it lightweight.
Additional materials required:
2x Wooden dowels for pontoons. Balsa is best, but any wood will work.- (½" to ¾" square and 6" long)
4x 8-32 x ½" wood screws to attach pontoons
1x bamboo skewer for the mast
1x Sail (cardboard from a cereal box, thin plastic, etc.) I use 17" x 11" plastic placemats, cut into fourths.
Hot glue as needed.
To assemble, scouts shape the square dowels to their liking and screw them to the hull. If using balsa wood, they can be easily shaped with sandpaper, and older scouts can carve it with a pocket knife.
Next, cut the sail to the desired shape and poke holes to fit onto the skewer. DO NOT FORGET TO REMOVE THE SHARP END OF THE SKEWER.
Use hot glue to secure the mast to the hull and the sail to the mast. A blob of glue on top of the skewer to protect from eyeball pokeys is not a bad idea.
Decorate with markers, stickers, etc.
These are a much "Thriftier" option than the official kit. Cost is less than $2 each, plus the filament. They won't meet any official requirements for a district-side regatta, but they are great for a fun activity. Our pack hosts a regatta at our spring crossover event, and it's a huge hit with the cubs.
