I use 3D printed boxes for various electronic projects, so I created this SCAD file to generate custom size containers that have a sliding lid.

The example box designs are given as STL files.  The file labels Box_X_Y_Z.stl provides the box X, Y, and Z inside dimensions in mm.

Using the SCAD File

After loading the SCAD file the “Preview i.e. F5” command will display an initial small box with inside dimensions for X, Y, and Z of 20mm, 15mm, and 5mm.  The wall and bottom thickness is 3mm and the cover thickness is 2mm.  This makes a good prototype for quickly printing to evaluate your printer’s tolerances. The cover is undersized by 0.5mm so you can check how smoothly it slides in place.  Adjust the “tol” variable for the cover fit and resistance to sliding.

If both the box and cover are too large to fit on your printer bed at the same time, you can comment out one in turn and generate separate STL files for each.

A box design may be customized by copying the modules into a new design file to add internal supports, nut traps, cut openings, or add text, etc.

Printing

I printed using ABS with no support.  I used a 0.25mm Z-step and 20% hexagonal fill.  After printing, trim off any “elephant’s foot” around the cover edges.
