If you wonder why I would put a GPS in a solar node, well I guess you havent had someone yet going after your nodes to steal them…….. anyways with the onboard mosfet, the GPS is deactivated anyways until you need it.
Remote Administration by now works like a charm.
The solar panel gets directly connected to the Pro micros B+ and B- , sounds wrong but with the XB8089D0 BMS in place and the board layout of the Faketec V5 this works perfectly.
Before I deploy any of the solar nodes they have to survive out in the open in my backyard mounted to a fence post for at least 3-4 weeks to make sure they are watertight and everything works as expected.
I was way to excited when I built my first one, ran up a 1600meter high mountain deployed it and it died on me a few days later………didnt learn after a second run……but the third did the trick XD ( first time I messed up the charging circuit and it simply died after the battery ran dry, second time a pro micro simply died completely……no clue why)
UPDATE 18.07.2025
Added a solar double shield for twice the solar capacity for Router mode with lots of traffic.
Part List:
FakeTec DIY Meshtastic Node:
gargomoma/fakeTec_pcb: A low-cost nrf52 device.
BME280 Environmental Sensor (optional):
Antenna:
GPS module (GPS +BDS): ( Optional)
Wiring cable 0.3mm:
IPEX to SMA: 5cm
Solar Panel: Link leads to the 20pieces pack I got, but you can find smaller amounts as well or any other solar panel with the same measurement.
Cable outlet: M8X1.25 GY 10pcs
Case screws: M3 x8mm
M3 brass melt inserts: M3xL6XOD5
Mouting screws for Faketec board: M2.5x5mm
ORing to prevent water intrusion over the SMA passthrough: ID6mm OD8mm
Silicone: I used heat resistant silicone to glue the wired up solar panel into the solar panel arm to prevent water intrusion, you can use any silicone you like really, make sure to use enough so water does not creep in behind the solar panel!
Water tight tape applied to the top side of the node where the front cover meets the main body, just to be 100% sure in case the TPU gasket fails:
1x M3 x25mm screw with lock nut and washer for the adjustable solar frame arm.
