My kids really enjoyed the VR game ‘Waltz of the Wizard’ by Aldin Software. It features a character called Skully with whom you can interact with and generally be unkindly towards. I had already finished a project by Joran to recreate one of the Portal Turrets from another VR game (Portal) and had some spare parts left over. Inspired by the eye animatronic projects by Will Cogley, I designed a ‘Real-life’ Skully.
Skully has motion activated reactions to abuse and motion tracking eyes. Skully can respond to being held, shaken, hit, thrown and left on his side.
Skully uses an ESP32 and ESPCam microcontroller to coordinate eye movements, has audio playback, and uses positional inputs to respond interactively. Skully’s jaw moves with speech, and he has some rudimentary eye tracking. To make Skully, you will need a 3D printer and soldering iron. The total cost of components including the printer filament is in the range of £130. All files are included here from 3D print files to material lists and coding.
*** Note, since adding the project the link to the jaw standard size servo shows a slightly taller version than I used. You can use the new Base (extra servo room) to allow more clearance for different size servos. My original one was designed for a maximum clearance of the lower part of the servo to be 28x40x30mm.***
