I had my wedding coming and as the saying goes, all I had was a hammer, then everything looked like a nail. But my hammer was a 3d printer. And I had a lot of  spare time to come up with idiotic ideas like this one.

It's a 3d printed backdrop frame for your photo booth. Party, wedding, whatever floats your boat.

It obviously needs some hardware and to be quite honest, if you just buy backdrop frame from the store, it might even be cheaper. But I sure didn't forget to mention the fact it's 3D printed to every guest on the wedding and it was a good discussion starter. And since then I borrowed it to couple other friends who had weddings.

You will need to buy wood from the hardware store. It's designed to be used with squared timber 44x44mm. You can make it as tall as you want.

I will list dimensions I have used and you can see on the photo. But you can adjust all of them, besides the one in bold.

All wood listed here is 44x44mm

  • 2x 2400mm squared timber (this adjusts the height)
  • 6x 400mm squared timber (you can make this shorter if you're not going for the 2400 mm height. If you are going for the same build, I suggest you keep it)
  • ~26x M6x20-35 wood screws (the hole diameter is 7.5mm, so any wood screw that is between 5-7mm in diameter will do)
  • 1x round stick 10-30mm in diameter - length of this decides how wide your backdrop is. I used 2100mm steel rod I found

  • 2x 1000mm squared timber
  • 2x M10 nut and 2x M10x30-36 bolt
  • 4 zipties that are <6mm in width

Assembly is I believe self-explanatory after seeing the photos.

For the full build you will need to print the following:

2x Backdrop_side_L, 2x Backdrop_bottom_L - makes the whole frame more stable, requires 4 screws in total

2x Backdrop_top_U - holds the rod on top, where you mount your backdrop background, requires 2 screws in total and 4 zipties

2x Backdrop_bottom_I, 2x Backdrop_bottom_Y, 2x Backdrop_bracket_V - the bottom main assembly - requires 16 screws, 2 bolts and 2 nuts in total

6x Backdrop_feet_end - you might not need this. They are endcaps for the feet. Depends how straight your timber is. I needed this because I got the cheapest timber I could find (pine). If it's too tall, you can just cut the bottom part in slicer. In my case it was press fit, so no mounting hardware required. Or just glue it in.
