Roof window opening rod

Universal wooden roof window extension rod for opening. My window has 40mm wide frame where I can attach this rod.

Source file (FreeCAD) available for possible modifications.

Motivation

I have roof window (not Velux) which is inaccessible but in very good spot for ventilation. For convenience I made simple attachment which helps me open or close pivot mechanism. I did not find anything similar to what I needed so I decided to create my own iteration.screwing

BOM

• roughly 45-50mm M6 threaded rod
• 2x M6 nuts
• 1x M3x25 bolt
• 1x M3 nut
• 1x M3x5 bolt
• 12mm aluminium rod cut to length
• 4x 3mm wood screws (pay attention to length so you don't get to the glass insert)
• (optional) 2x M6 1mm thick washers

Print options

• 0,2mm layer height
• 0,4mm nozzle
• PET-G for UV resistance
• 2 walls, 4 bottom/top layers
• inner walls first
• 15% gyroid infill
• tuned printer for correct tolerances (inner diameters are 0,1mm larger and fit pretty well for me)
• No supports

Assembly

1. print files with orientations which do not require supports
2. finish bolt holes with 6mm and 3mm drill bit
3. fit rod attachment to rod and drill hole through using printed parts as guides for drill bit
4. fit in longer M3 bolt and secure with glue (blue threadlocker for future disassembly)
5. fit rod handle to other end of rod
6. drill undersized hole and create thread in rod with threading tool
7. screw in shorter M3 with drop of threadlocker
8. (optional) drill 2mm max holes in window for easier attachment
9. attach roof window mount to the window using wood screws (the closer to window top, the smaller force need to be applied to open/close the window)
10. attach rod to mount using M6 threaded rod and secure with M6 nuts and threadlocker, optionally add washers for smoother operation and tighter tolerance
