In a recent vacation I purchased a miniature sword replica in Toledo, Spain. As said in the description it was a replica of the “Tizona”. The sword came with the following description:

TIZONA DEL CID

This sword belonged to de castilian knight Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, known as "El Cid Campeador" in the XI century.

He was the prototype of the knight and loyal vassal who took part with his king Alphonse VI in the conquest of Toledo. Subsecuently he conquested the City an Kingdom of Valencia to the moors.

Here its Wikipedia page:

Since I liked the sword, I designed a small stand to display it. While making this stand, I also modelled the sword. This model is less detailed than the replica that I was trying to imitate, as its sole purpose was to help me model the stand.

That said, there are three ways to print the sword:

  • All in one piece. This is the model of the sword without any partitions.
  • In two pieces. The blade and the handle are printed separately. You will need one of each for one sword:
    • x1 blade
    • x1 handle_one piece
  • In three pieces. The blade and the handle are printed separately but in this case the handle is divided in two identical parts. You will need two handle parts and one blade for one sword:
    • x1 blade
    • x2 handle_two pieces

Regardless of the type of sword construction chosen, here are its most relevant dimensions:

Regarding the base, this is built with two pieces:

  • Post. The vertical part that makes contact with the handle of the sword.
  • Base. The base of the whole assembly with two recesses. One for he post to be attached and a longer one for the blade of the sword to fit in it.

For one base, you will need one part of each.

Here are its most relevant dimensions when the sword is in position:

Print settings

Every part was printed in PLA, without rafts or supports, at 0.2 mm resolution and 15% infill.

In the following image we can observe the recommended positions for each part:

For the printing of the sword or the handle in one piece, I'm not really sure how this models could be printed properly. That's precisely why they're broken down into many parts.

Assembly

The assembly of the sword and stand are quite easy.

First, the sword can be assembled in three ways, depending of the constructions method chosen:

  • In one piece. There is no need for assembly since the model is already complete
  • In two pieces. As seen in the following gif, simply insert the blade into the handle. You can use a little superglue to permanently secure the pieces:
  • In three pieces. As seen in the gif, first complete the handle by gluing the two identical parts before inserting the blade. In this case, you need to glue to permanently the pieces:

As for the stand, you only have to glue the two parts before displaying the sword:
