Smart NFC Pill-Box
A 3D-printable enclosure that turns any medication into a connected, zero-friction reminder system.
Sidenote: Always, Alwaaays, use food grade PLA for this type of stuff.
- Plastics (and the compounds used to colour them) breakdown over time and sometimes even off gas and you don't want to be swallowing that shit all the time.
- Even though it's not a super volatile organic compound that the capsules are made out of (most are just gelatin) micro pieces of the gel caps could wear off and into the grooves of your layer lines over time which has the potential to then introduce mould into your container (especially if you live somewhere humid).
What It Is
A compact, 3D-printed pill box with a fully-embedded NFC tag.
Paired with Home Assistant (or any NFC-aware automation platform like apple shortcuts), it becomes a hands-free way to:
Confirm today’s dose – scan once when you open the box; if no scan is recorded before a user-defined time (e.g., 09 : 00) the system sends an automatic reminder.
Count remaining pills – every successful scan decrements an internal counter so you always know what’s left.
Trigger refill alerts – when the count drops below a custom threshold, you receive a “restock” notification.
Auto-refill after pickup – optional GPS/zone automations can add a preset quantity. When Home Assistant or Apple Shortcuts detects that you’ve visited both your doctor and pharmacy within a configurable window.

Pet meds and feed additives
Any situation where “forgetting a pill” or “running out unexpectedly” causes problems
How It Works
Print the enclosure – PLA or PETG at 0.2 mm layer height; 2-hour print for most FDM machines.
Pause to insert the NFC tag – the slicer script pauses at layer 1.40mm so you can drop the tag in.
Pair the tag in Home Assistant – mobile app → Settings ▸ Tags ▸ Add.
(Pair the tag in Apple Shortcuts)
Load your medication and start scanning once per dose. That’s it.
Put an end to missed doses and last-minute pharmacy runs—print your Smart NFC Pill-Box today and let your home automation handle the remembering.
